Step 2: Understand Graduation Requirements, Make a 4-year Plan, & Use Your Course Request Worksheet

Get Set...

Before you begin the course request process, it is important to make sure you understand your overall goals and make sure the courses you choose will help you prepare for them.

FHS encourages you to thoroughly read all of the scheduling resources, but the most valuable resource you have is the Course of Study. The most important and useful parts of the Course of Study are:

                            * Graduation Requirements
                            * Educational Planning Chart
                            * Summary of Courses by Department
                            * Course Descriptions and Fee Structure by Subject

TIP:  The Summary of Courses by Department page contains a simplified chart of all of the available courses.  Many students use these pages to see a quick overview of the courses that they are able to take based on their grade level.  The Course Descriptions page has more detailed information about specific courses such as prerequisites, auditions/teacher recommendations that may be required, course fees, etc.

For current 8th graders, the 2024-2025 FHS Enrollment Plan & Course Request Worksheet - Grade 9 is a great tool to use to prepare for submitting your course requests online because it provides specific information about what courses are required and what courses can be chosen as electives.  This document does NOT give information about what students need to have taken as a prerequisite, however.  This form needs to be turned in to your Baker Middle School Access teacher no later than Friday, February 23rd  (NOTE: Deadline extended until Monday, February 26th.  8th graders must complete BOTH parts of the process: 1.) online scheduling AND 2.) turn in the completed paper form.  (Current 9th-11th graders only need to complete the online part.)

How Do I Use These Tools to Prepare?

Use the 4-Year Educational Planning Chart of the Course of Study to start (or refine) your four-year academic plan. Once you have a plan, you can begin to check off the courses you need/want to schedule online and, if applicable, your Course Request Worksheet form based on that plan.

Are there any suggestions for a 4-year plan?

While all students should select courses with an end goal in mind (starting a career, preparing to enter the military, or meeting college entrance requirements), there are very different paths they can take to get there.

But figuring out a 4-year plan can be tough, especially if you are undecided about what your future holds right now.  The good news is that the Course of Study has a section called "Pathway Options for Course Selections" that can help you develop a four-year plan.  There are several Pathway examples, and any of them are strong enough to get you prepared for a specific goal, but still they still give you the flexibility to switch to another pathway later if you change your mind.  Another Pathway that combines traditional classes with Advanced Placement and College Credit Plus classes is outlined in the Course of Study under the "Associates of Arts - Liberal Arts" page.

The Pathways shown in the Course of Study are only examples of typical 4-year plans.  You have the ability to modify the Pathway to fit your own goals, provided you are still meeting all of the local and state graduation requirements, too. If you are still uncertain about your options, talk with your parents/guardians, teachers, mentors, and counselors about ways you might be able to put together your own unique four-year plan that meets your individual needs.

Once you have planned and are ready to schedule your classes, move on to Step 3.
