Black History month continues with Thurgood Marshall-perhaps best known as the first African American Supreme Court justice-played an instrumental role in promoting racial equality during the civil rights movement.  As a practicing attorney, Marshall argued a record-breaking 32 cases before the Supreme Court, winning 29 of them.  In fact, Marshall represented and won more cases before the high court than any other person.  One of his well known cases was Brown vs. Board of Education.  During his 24-year term as Supreme Court justice, Marshall's passionate support for individual and civil rights guided his policies and decisions.  Most historians regard him as an influential figure in shaping social policies and upholding laws to protect minorities.

Gladys Mae West was a mathematician.  Thanks to Ms. West we can use GPS to easily navigate the world.  She started her 42 year career at the naval base in Dahlgren, VA in 1956 doing mathematical modeling and calculations by hand that would eventually impact technologies and change the way we interact with the world.  She analyzed data from satellites that determine the earth's shape and different locations.  In 1986, her work on the satellite geodesy was published and is the reason we have an accurate GPS.  She was inducted into the United States Air Force Hall of Fame in 2018.  In her 80's, she is still taking online classes to complete her PhD. And she prefers a paper map!

Nichell Nichols: As an actress, Nichols was the first woman of color in a leading role on prime time American television.  In 1968, after sharing the first ever on screen interracial kiss with a white cast member, the producers cut her lines and put her character into the background as a response to letters of complaint.  She considered leaving the show but was convinced to stay after a chance encounter with Dr. King (a self proclaimed trekkie) who emphasized how much representation matters.  Nichols saw the realization of this when Dr. Mae Jemison named her as inspiration in applying to NASA.  After her time as Lieutenant Uhura on Star Trek, Nichols worked with NASA to recruit minority and female personnel for the space agency.
