Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's)
- My child must bring a musical instrument on the bus. Why can't he be assigned his own individual seat?
Answer: There is no provision in the law that requires an individually-assigned seat for a student who carries a musical instrument to and from school. Students should only carry items onto the bus that can be held in their laps. It is possible that students with larger instruments may need to make alternate transportation arrangements on band days.
- Doesn't a law exist that requires me to see my child at the bus stop from my livingroom window?
Answer: There is no provision in the law that requires a parent to see the child waiting at the bus stop from their home. Parents are encouraged to walk their child to the bus stop. This is an excellent way for the parent to be involved in promoting bus stop safety.
- I make my child wait inside of my house until the bus is at the stop. I have heard this is not allowed-is this true?
Answer: Ohio law requires children to be waiting at the bus stop prior to its arrival. Bus drivers count the students at the bus stop before they load and as they get on the bus to ensure all children are safely on board. If students are not waiting at the bus stop the bus driver cannot count them and cannot be certain the students are all safely on board. Waiting at the bus stop before the bus arrives further ensures that no one chases after the bus-this is a very dangerous thing to do. Many districts also instruct their buses not to stop at locations where no students are waiting.
