Superintendent Update
January 31, 2012
I know that many students and families have been hoping for snow this month but so far we have been fortunate to have very nice spring-like temperatures. I want to address a very important issue with the Fairborn community. Last Friday night, at the Fairborn/Miamisburg basketball game there was an incident with one Fairborn High School student injuring a Miamisburg High School basketball player. The entire Fairborn school community is praying for the speedy recovery of this player. Fairborn City Schools does not condone and will not tolerate this behavior and the individual involved has been identified with further action pending. As a school community, it is important that we all work together to make sure that these type of incidents do not happen, but when and if they do,  we must address the individuals involved and make the appropriate decisions regarding what will happen next. I am encouraging parents, students, and community members to talk about this incident with your children. As a school community, it is our job to educate our students, not just inside the classroom,  but also in every opportunity we have with them. Teaching tolerance, good sportsmanship, camaraderie and a strong work ethic are all a part of being part of a team. My hope is that all of those involved will learn from this experience. It is also very important to understand that one student’s action does not reflect the ideals and values of Fairborn City Schools or the Fairborn community. We are a strong school district dedicated to the youth in Fairborn!
I want to thank the Fairborn business owners who recently visited the Fairborn High School business classes taught by Jan Fleming and Jan Wright. These local business owners answered questions about their business structure, daily operations, and business decisions. They also talked to students about interviewing techniques and job responsibilities. Thank you to:

At Baker Middle School, students and staff are gearing up for the Super Bowl! Baker Middle School Muse Machine will be holding a dance on February 3rd. Students are encouraged to support their favorite team by wearing NFL gear! As part of the dance and celebration, there will be a quarter back challenge, Super Bowl Trivia, a touchdown dance competition and team photos. Baker Middle School is also collecting used cell phones to be recycled as part of the Cincinnati Zoo’s Go Banana’s Challenge. Mrs. Bell’s Science classes and the Baker Middle School Art Club are partnering in this endeavor. Most cell phones contain the mineral coltan, which is being mined in the Democratic Republic of Congo, the habitat of Lowland Gorillas. Because of this mining, the habitat of the gorillas is being destroyed. Any community member can bring used cell phones, chargers, batteries, or other phone accessories to the Baker Middle School main office. If Baker can collect 300 cell phones, one of the Cincinnati Zoo’s gorillas will create a painting for Baker Middle School! We need your help!
At Fairborn Intermediate School, Ms. Marie Miller’s Multi-Disabilities classes prepared fruit baskets for two elderly couples living near the school. Students in the class worked on reading written picture directions and counting skills to make the baskets. Thank you to Ms. Miller and her students for reaching out to touch the lives of those neighboring Fairborn Intermediate School! Fairborn Intermediate students have participated in special “Hat Days” where they pay $1 to be able to wear a hat in the building for a day. The money raised is used to provide a $500 scholarship to a graduating Fairborn senior who wishes to go into the military upon graduation. This scholarship is in memory of Artimus Brassfield, a former Fairborn student who was killed in action. The Fairborn Intermediate Student Council and National Elementary Honor Society worked together with teachers to form a new scholarship for $500 which will be awarded for the first time this year to a student who attended Fairborn Intermediate School. Thank you to these two groups for your support of scholarship programs!
Fairborn Primary School will be hosting a “Pennies for Pasta” (Leukemia Lymphoma Society) fundraiser for the entire month of February. This is Fairborn Primary Schools 4th year raising funds for Lymphoma, and this school has collected over $6000 to support this effort in the past. Students and community members can bring in spare change or other donations and if parents or community members send checks please make payable to: Leukemia Lymphoma Society. There is a 3rd grade student at Fairborn Primary School that has battled Leukemia and has been cancer free for almost a year. The winning classroom at Fairborn Primary School will receive a Pasta Party from the Olive Garden and the class in 2nd place will receive a pizza party compliments of the Aukerman Family! What a great way to learn about community service and giving to those in need!
The Skyhawk Athletic Club will be hosting the 5th Annual Spring Fling Monte Carlo Party on Saturday, March 24, 2012 at the American Legion Hall Dignam-Whitmore Post 526 in Fairborn. All proceeds from the event benefit Fairborn Athletics at Baker Middle School and Fairborn High School. Come out for an evening of fun, food, gaming and chips! There will also be cash drawings and door prizes. Tickets are $50 and admit 2 adults (minimum age is 21). This is a major fundraiser for Fairborn Athletic programs!
On a final note, the Fairborn City School District will have an Emergency Renewal Levy on the ballot March 6, 2012. This levy is a renewal of an Emergency Levy passed five years ago. The Emergency Renewal Levy is critical to our continued progress and will raise $5 million for five years. The classroom teachers are working hard and our Report Card reflects the hard work on the part of teachers and students. The unions and ALL Fairborn City Schools employees have made concessions and pay an additional 5% for healthcare premiums and also agreed to a pay freeze for this calendar school year. We want a strong community and school system. The Emergency Renewal Levy will help Fairborn City Schools preserve the current educational programs we currently operate. Strong Schools-Strong Community!
I hope that you have a great week!
