Accounting I

Prerequisite: Recordkeeping or Algebra I

      This is an introductory course in accounting. Accounting concepts including balance sheets and income statements and accounting practices including journalizing, posting, and all phases of the accounting cycle are studied. This course is designed for students who wish to continue their education in a business-related subject or accounting. It is highly recommended for college-bound business students. The intensive course content requires good daily attendance and additional work outside of class.

Accounting II – Automated
½ Credit
Prerequisite: Accounting I
Course Fee: Cost of Workbook

      After a brief review of the accounting concepts and practices presented in Accounting I, this semester automated course teaches advanced accounting concepts using an accounting software program. Topics include journalizing and posting transactions, financial statements and the closing process, payroll accounting, and depreciation entries. It is highly recommended for college-bound business students. The intensive course content requires good daily attendance and additional work outside of class.


Advanced Word/Desktop Publishing
½ Credit
Prerequisite: Keyboarding/Computer Applications

      This course is a continuation of Keyboarding/Computer Applications; students will learn advanced formatting techniques using Microsoft Word. They also will gain experience using graphics and designing newsletters. This course will continue to emphasize the development of acquired keyboarding speed and accuracy skills. Students will be required to design and complete individual projects.

Consumer Education

Prerequisites: None

      This is a course for juniors and seniors designed to develop knowledge of basic consumer values that will help students evaluate goods and services intelligently. Students will learn about buying a car, renting an apartment, personal budgeting, career development, consumer law, taking a vacation, making wise buying choices, and computing income taxes.

Introduction to Business

      This course is recommended for freshmen and sophomores. It is structured so that students will gain an understanding of the business and economic factors that affect their everyday lives. Topics include supply and demand, economic systems, banking, career exploration, finance, insurance, employment skills, credit, and taxes.

Introduction to PowerPoint/Excel

Prerequisite: Keyboarding/Computer Applications

      This course is designed to help students gain expertise in two professional-quality programs: PowerPoint (a presentation program) and Excel (a spreadsheet program). Students will develop PowerPoint skills in slide transitions, animation, graphics, digital photography, and many other techniques to be included in slide designs and shows. Students also will develop skills in Excel including writing formulas, charting, and formatting values and fields. This course will continue to emphasize the development of acquired keyboarding skills and to help students maintain previous speed and accuracy techniques. Students will be required to design and complete individual projects.

Keyboarding/Computer Applications

Prerequisites: None

      This course teaches students touch-typing skills. Microsoft Word and Microtype are used. Students will learn to correctly format personal letters, enumerations, outlines, and a complete research paper including title page, table of contents, references, works cited and bibliography.

      This course is recommended for freshmen and sophomores. This course provides students with many valuable consumer and vocational skills. Students learn how to prepare a wide range of financial records for personal and business use. Students become familiar with procedures related to personal money management including personal budgeting, filing, banking transactions, buying on credit, and preparing personal tax returns. Major areas of business recordkeeping, such as sales and cashier records, inventory, payroll, and basic accounting, also are covered.
