English

      Students are required to earn four English credits including a composition course as part of their graduation requirements. All English classes include reading, vocabulary, grammar, spelling, composition, and literature but with varying degrees of emphasis and difficulty.

Advanced Composition – Honors
½ Credit
Prerequisites: “B’s” in all previous English courses

      This college-preparatory course will build on techniques mastered in other composition work. Students will write a variety of papers on diverse subjects using different methods of composition. Each student is required to write a research paper that meets all criteria in order to earn credit for the course. Students must have strong grammar skills to succeed in this course. This course satisfies the composition requirement for graduation.

American Literature I

Prerequisites: English 9 and English 10

      This course is a study of American literature beginning with the earliest letters, journals, and historical documents and continuing through the development of the first American short stories and novels. The works of Irving, Cooper, Poe, Hawthorne, and Melville are emphasized. College-bound students are encouraged to take this course.

American Literature II

Prerequisites: English 9 and English 10

      This course is a study of American literature beginning with the works written at the end of the Civil War. The changes in American literature are traced to the present. The works of the major twentieth century American novelists, poets, and playwrights are emphasized. College-bound students are encouraged to take this course.

American Literature II – Honors

Prerequisites: English 9 and English 10

      These survey courses cover all the topics usually taught in American Literature I and II; however, they move more rapidly and are more challenging than the regular American literature courses. Emphasis will be placed on writing literary papers. Projects using the computer lab will be included. The challenging reading selections require students to possess maturity, good judgment, and insight.


Creative Writing
½ Credit
Prerequisites: English 9 and English 10

      This course is designed for students who want to improve their writing of poems, short stories, drama, and essays. Modern short stories and poetry will be studied, both to increase the understanding of human experience and to observe the writer’s techniques. A final portfolio encompassing all styles of writing is required to obtain credit. This course does not fulfill the composition requirement for graduation.

Drama I

Prerequisite: English 9

      This course is designed to acquaint students with theater as an art form. Students will study the history of theater, read plays, and participate in theater performance activities.

Drama II

Prerequisite: “C” in Drama I

      This course is designed to acquaint students with the many aspects of theater history and stage production, from play selection through performance evaluation. Students will be involved in theater performance activities.

      English 9 is a required course in grade 9 and is integrated with the language arts curriculum and state of Ohio model standards. This course includes the study of literature, composition, oral communications, independent reading, vocabulary development, grammar, and the mechanics of writing.

      This course is similar to the English 9 course; but the depth, breadth, and speed of the class will be advanced. Acceptance into the class will be based on teacher recommendation, a writing sample, test scores, grades, past performance and likelihood for success in an advanced course. The number of sections taught may be limited. Summer reading may be required.

      This course is designed for students whose native language is not English and who are limited English proficient. The NCAA Clearinghouse will not count this course as an English credit.

English Literature II

      This college-preparatory course is a survey of English literature from the eighteenth century to recent times.


Foundations of Composition

Prerequisites: English 9 and English 10

      This course is designed to expand the writing knowledge and skills of students through different types of writing structures and topics. Vocabulary, grammar, and composition/essays are a part of this course. Students will create, revise, and critique their own portfolios. This course satisfies the composition requirement for graduation.

Literature and Composition – Honors – Advanced Placement

Prerequisites: English 9 and English 10

      This college-preparatory course provides a more in-depth survey of world literature with emphasis on oral and written literary analysis. Through discussion, reading, and writing, students will become aware of the resources of language and how style, subject, and audience are related. Language, characters, action, themes, structure, meaning, and value will be examined. These courses prepare students to take the Advanced Placement Exam for English Literature and Composition for which college credit may be awarded. The challenging reading selections require students to possess maturity, good judgment, and insight.

Science Fiction

Prerequisites: English 9 and English 10

      This college-preparatory course is a survey of science fiction since the twentieth century. This course is reading intensive and entails discussions and writing assignments that address the social impact and the foresight of the writers’ works. The literature includes both short stories and novels of the science fiction genre.

Speech I

Prerequisites: None

      Speech I will provide students with experiences in public speaking that will develop an awareness of everyday speaking situations. Students will be required to organize and deliver several types of platform speeches and develop an awareness of various communication media.

Speech II

Prerequisite: “C” in Speech I

      This course is designed to provide students an opportunity to acquire new skills in selecting and adopting material for oral reading, media communication, basic principles of debate, interpretive speaking, advanced platform speaking, and application of parliamentary procedure. Competition is encouraged.


Twentieth Century Literature
½ Credit
Prerequisites: English 9 and English 10

      The literature selections in this course include a variety of types of works by twentieth century writers. Grammar skills and practical writing techniques also will be reviewed. Considerable emphasis will be placed on interpretation, analysis, group participation, and discussion.

World Literature I

Prerequisites: English 9 and English 10

      This college-preparatory course is a survey of world literature from the earliest times through the sixteenth century. A variety of philosophical themes will be discussed. Class participation and clearly written compositions are important aspects of this course.

World Literature II
