Social Studies
Students are required to earn three social studies credits including Civics as part of their graduation requirements.
American Studies – Part A

American Studies is a chronological study of the United States from 1877 to the present, post-reconstruction through the twenty-first century. This course will include the seven social studies standards: history, people in society, geography, economics, government, citizenship rights and responsibilities, and social studies skills and methods. Students will develop a deeper understanding of the role citizens play in their country. The influences of geography, culture, and economics will be emphasized. Students will understand how governmental changes that happened during this historical period have affected the world as a whole. The students also will continue to expand their command of social studies skills and methods. This course helps students to prepare for the Ohio Graduation Social Studies Test.
Civics

Prerequisites: World Studies and American Studies
Civics is a survey course in U.S. Government that is designed to give potential voters full awareness of their responsibilities as citizens, as well as knowledge of their rights under a democratic form of government. It teaches students the framework of our form of government and gives them insight into the workings of a democracy. Moreover, it teaches students that a democratic government’s survival depends upon the intelligent decisions of informed voters.
Economics – Honors

Prerequisites: 3.0 GPA, “B” in World Studies, and “B” in American Studies
Economics is the study of how a nation organizes itself to produce the goods and services that the people want and need and how these goods and services are distributed to the people. Economics discusses how supply and demand determine price in the free enterprise system. Other areas discussed are: comparative economic systems, money and banking, international trade and gold reserves outflow to other nations, business enterprises, and the selling of stock and the capitalistic system. Projects using the computer lab will be included.
Social Living

Prerequisites: World Studies and American Studies
The facts of human behavior have changed little since the time of primitive humanity, but our understanding of them increases with each new psychological idea that is explored. This introductory psychology course should enable students to see themselves differently; and as a consequence, view their own behavior more realistically. Topics will include sensation and perception, altered states of consciousness, memory, learning, psychological disorders, testing, human development, theories of personality, and other related topics.
Sociology

Prerequisites: World Studies and American Studies
Sociology is a semester course that deals with the study of human groups. Each society sets up unique social arrangements for satisfying the biological and psychological needs of its members. The social organizations that prevail often fall short of the demands made upon them. This course deals with the attempts made by our own culture and other cultures to change the institutions or to change the individuals in order to achieve a harmony between the self and his or her society. Topics will include social interactions, cultures and variations of cultures, processes of socialization, social institutions, and other current social issues.
World Affairs – Honors

Prerequisites: 3.0 GPA, “B” in World Studies, and “B” in American Studies
The World Affairs class is directed along lines that will help students develop an understanding of the complexity of U.S. involvement in international affairs and the effectiveness and limitations of various instruments of foreign policy. Students also will keep abreast of the current national and international events of major significance. During the semester, an in-depth study is made of several topics. A series of readings is used in the course. In addition, research is required. Those students who are interested in obtaining an understanding of the “why” of world events and who are willing to read and form intelligent opinions will find the course valuable.
World History – Honors – Advanced Placement

Requirement: Teacher Recommendation
World History – Honors – Advanced Placement in a reading-intensive, fast-paced course that follows a college-level world history curriculum. The course prepares students to take the Advanced Placement Exam for World History for which college credit may be awarded. This course will utilize geography and the history of world events to provide students with an understanding of the interaction among and evolution of major societies in regard to technological developments, cultural achievements, religion, and the various themes of philosophy and literature. The focus is on major world cultures from stone-age man to modern times.
