Report Card Press Release

September 13, 2018

With the release of the State Report Card, Ohio school districts are busy analyzing data and working hard to understand all of the intricacies with the different graded areas.   The media will post the scores by county/school and the public will be looking at school districts based on the A-F grading criteria. Attached to this press release, you will find the Guide to the 2018 Report Card.  There are six components to the report card-Achievement, Gap Closing, Improving At-Risk K-3 Readers, Progress, Graduation Rate and Prepared for Success.  This year, Fairborn received a “B” in Gap Closing. Schools must close the achievement gaps that exist between groups of students that may be based on income, race, ethnicity or disability. Most importantly, this component shows that Fairborn is meeting performance expectations for our must vulnerable students in English language arts, math and graduation.  Our teachers are working very hard so that our students have measured positive growth every year. Additionally, Fairborn received a “C” in Graduation Rate with 85.5% of students graduating in four years. This is a high percentage of graduates completing in four years. According to the Ohio Department of Education the letter grades represent:

93%-100: A

89%-92.9%: B

84%-88.9%: C

79%-83.9%: D

Less than 79%: F

The Ohio School Report Card looks at one part of the educational experience of Ohio’s students-(Fairborn’s students) the academic part.  There are many factors that impact the state report card for school districts as is stated in the “Guide to 2018 Ohio School Report Card.” While the state continues to tweak the report card, district administrators and teachers are working hard utilizing data and best practices to improve and address all student areas of achievement and will continue to strive to provide the best education possible for all students in our community to be successful-not only in school but after graduation with whatever career path they choose.   As a school district, we continue to look at data and instructional practices to best serve our student’s needs. Our teachers and district staff realize the importance of academic achievement and of reaching every student to help them fulfill the promise of a life they create and dream of.

“The report cards are not the only measure of the success or accomplishments of a school or district. Visiting schools, talking to parents, students, teachers and graduates can paint a more complete picture of the educational experience. To shed light on these other aspects of school quality, the state has included a link to the district profile page, to describe the unique qualities and accomplishments to make them proud.” FCS utilizes the district website, Facebook and Twitter to communicate the outstanding hard work of our staff and students. Every day of every week, you will find our students exceling educationally and in music, sports, volunteer service, and leadership roles. In the district October newsletter, we will be focusing on our students and their achievements.  Specifically, we will showcase graduates from all walks of life who are pursuing their individual dreams of success. Military service, college, trade school or other-we are going to tell the story of the success of our students after graduation. It is our goal to provide the best education possible for Fairborn students and the district will provide a balance to the state report card by highlighting Fairborn graduates in all walks of life. Is there more work to be done? Absolutely-and with our dedicated staff and administration we will continue to work hard in the best interests of our children and community.  The attached graphics highlight the tested areas of the 2017-2018 report card. Of the 21 areas of testing, Fairborn has seen positive growth in 18 of the 21 areas.  We still have more work to do, but progress is being made! Click here to view Fairborn progress report!
